Alina and Mal both have Grisha powers, but theirs don't seem to be doing them any good right now. In fact, they're basically powerless and are constantly being chased by people trying to capture them or kill them. The two meet each other after Alina rescues Mal from certain doom at the hands of some baddies that want to use
The story takes place in a country that is not named, but it is implied to be Russia. The country is in a state of war with the neighboring country of Ravka, which the main character uses to her advantage.
The main character is Alina Starkov, who has a rare ability known as a "grisha power." She and her brother are taken from their home by the army and forced to train at the academy for Grisha, where she soon befriends an older boy named Mal. Alina's best friend at the academy is named Genya, who was experimented on by the Darkling.
The Darkling is an evil ruler of the Darkling Court, and he seeks to find a way to defeat Ravka's army. He also experiments on Grishas and turns them into his slaves called "Strigoi". He turns Genya into one of his slaves.
A man named Yuriy helps Alina escape from the academy when she decides she wants to return home.
When Alina does return home, she learns that her mother has died and that her brother is missing in action.
Alina goes back to spend more time with Mal at his house only to discover that his entire family was killed and he had been taken
